The Six Scents

By Brieanna Canady

What girl doesn’t like to smell good? The best part of finding a good perfume is making it your “signature scent.” Working at ULTA in the fragrance department encouraged me to try perfume after perfume. Eventually, I found my signature scent – Paris Hilton. Not the classiest role model, but she does have a great perfume line! So does Britney Spears.

If you’re not exactly sure how to pick a signature scent, I’d start with something seasonal. Woodsy, vanilla, or a soft musk is appropriate in the winter. Floral or garden scents are favored more in the spring. Light airy scents are great for summer, and warm and sweet scents are fitting for fall.

Our Suggestions:

Fresh-

  • Amazing Grace by Philosophy
  • Light Blue by D&G
  • Abigail by Aerie

Sweet-

  • Pink Sugar by Aquolina
  • Fantasy by Britney Spears
  • Saint by Kat Von D

Floral-

  • Daisy by Marc Jacobs
  • Very Hollywood by Michael Kors
  • In Bloom by Reese Witherspoon

Warm-

  • Hot by Ralph Lauren
  • Vera Wang Princess
  • Hollister SoCal

Citrus-

  • DKNY Ripe Raspberry Candy Apple
  • Wild by Ralph Lauren
  • Harajuku Lovers G by Gwen Stefani

Woody

  • Miss Dior Cherie by Dior
  • Burberry Brit Sheer
  • Viva La Juicy by Juicy Couture

Important Tips:

  • When searching for a scent, only smell two scents at a time. It’s suggested that you sniff coffee beans in between fragrances because it clears your nose from all the fragrances so they do not all start to smell the same.
  • Understand that no perfume smells exactly the same on every person. Perfume reacts with your body’s chemistry and creates its own kind of scent. If you really like a perfume, spray a small amount on your skin. Wait at least two hours and see if you still enjoy how it smells.
  • When finding a fragrance, consider three things. One, the price. (Some perfumes are extremely expensive.) Two, make sure you like it – after all you’re the one who is going to be wearing it all day. Three, consider if its “you”. (No one wants to be known as the 12 year old who smells like a grandma)
  • When applying perfume, only apply a little at a time. It is easier to apply more later on than to try and wipe it off after you’ve applied too much.
  • When buying a fragrance, it’s best to buy the smallest bottle. If you end up hating the scent, you wont have a big bottle just lying around and if you end up loving the scent you can always go back to the store and get more. Also, the smaller bottles normally have a decent price on them.

  1. Definitely just tried to find a new perfume…could have used this list a week ago haha. I ended up getting Vera Wang- Glam Princess. While the name doesn’t really fit me, the scent is awesome. Also, while I was sniffing out all the perfumes in Macy’s, the saleswomen did have me sniff coffee beans in between. Definitely works!
